Assessment methodologies

Objectives

The development of assessment methodologies using machine learning approaches to short answer grading for moderators/tutors to assess students’ activity on blended-learning Technology programmes.

What was done

  • Review report/paper produced on the state-of-the-art in relation to the applications of Natural Language Processing (NLP) for student assessment – “A (Systematic) Review of Natural Language Processing for Automatic Student Assessment and Scoring (in Learning Management Systems)”;
  • Existing Machine Learning algorithms assessed using publicly available datasets. Recommendations developed on the requirements for building customized ASAG systems for courses and modules offered in the Irish HE institutions.
  • Learning Approaches to Automated Assessment – Strategies for Short Answer Grading” for the CSEDU (14th International Conference on Computer Supported Education 2022) conference April 2022.
  • A research paper based on the adaptation of publicly available datasets was submitted to the 33rd Irish Signals and Systems Conference (ISSC 2022). “On the Application of Sentence Transformers to Automatic Short Answer Grading in Blended Assessment”
